Here are 8 Tips for Do-It-Yourself SEO – written by someone who will do it for you….

If you have the time and motivation, you may be able to
avoid the cost of hiring an SEO consultant or agency.
Post good content, with appropriate links!

How to do SEO yourself:

  1. Before you jump into Keyword Research, think about your target audience.
    • Consider what phrases someone might put into their search tool when they need your product or service. Example: “Palm Springs Vacation Rentals” should be a good keyword target, if indeed, you offer rental properties in Palm Springs.
    • If you are selling pet supplies in Palm Desert, then it seems logical you should target “Palm Desert pet supplies” as a keyword in your strategy.
    • Remember, people searching for your product or service don’t know your business name, so use what you are selling to create your keyword lists.
  2. How do you think people will search for your product or service?
    • Obviously, we are going to focus our attention on what Google can do for you.
    • There are other search tools out there that can help with your SEO efforts, e.g., Bing and Yahoo.
  3. Consider the layout and navigation of your website. Sensible links get “SEO juice.”
    • A clean, easy to navigate website, with links to pages that are named with Keywords will also help Google to understand what your site is all about.
    • Sensible links means making sure that the link you create lands on a page about that topic. Your website visitors and Google will appreciate this consideration.
  4. Post new articles – on a blog, or update pages on your site, regularly.
    • It cannot be said too often. You have to create content with links back to your site.
    • Updates to your site’s pages are also seen by Google as fresh material, to be sure to re-index your site and keep your pages current. Change is good for SEO.
  5. Use Social Media to build an audience and amplify your message distribution (channels.)
    • “Sharing is caring.” It also puts your links in the hands of many more people.
    • The value of Social Media to your SEO efforts is immeasurable. One good post shared by hundreds or thousands of people can really help with getting attention.
  6. Explore other online sites for opportunities to share e.g. Alignable, Medium, Quora.
    • You can do a search on “guest posting opportunities” too.
    • There are probably dozens of places that make sense for your brand to be seen on websites with like-minded readers. Just one post shared by many will boost your SEO juice.
    • Consider posting well-crafted replies on some of the larger sites, like Huffington Post, Forbes, Fortune, Inc., Entrepreneur, or any other publication in a genre similar to your business.
  7. Explore Google’s resources for SEO best practices.
    • This should go without saying, but Google offers a ton of good advice on how to boost your SEO.
    • Google also owns YouTube, so using Video advertising for your business will truly amplify your reach across a wider audience.
    • Again, search for “how to use video to promote my business” and you’ll find a wealth of information from myriad sources.
  8. Learn as much as you can from online SEO resources, like Moz, Search Engine Land, etc.
    • Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list of SEO resources, so, you are on your own to continue this education process.
    • There are nearly nine million results (at this moment) for a search on: “how can I learn to do SEO” So, there should be no limit to what you can learn, with enough time and motivation.

Serious Geek Stuff I Might Never Have Known

buzzfeed_sloths_internet_easter_eggsSometimes, you just have to click, to see what happens. Don’t do this, if they say it’s FREE! Malware is everywhere… But, sometimes, something is written just right. And, you cannot believe it, so you have to try it.

So it goes with Konami Code. Fully skeptical, I went ahead with instructions from this post on Hootsuite. And, would you believe? If you go to Buzzfeed, as they suggest and “type in the Konami code,” as instructed, you really do land on another page. Holy Good Friday and Easter weekend, Batman!

That little PacMan game at the bottom of my Google maps was kind of an annoyance. I never actually thought about Easter Eggs, until I stumbled upon the Hootsuite article, led there by my exploration of Digg. Yes, I’ve been wandering a bit today. Inspired by a Tweet from Melissa Galt, I dropped into Digg, to see what was cooking, there. So, now you have the full backtrack. As Bernie Mac used to say; “Let’s move on.”

A search for Konami Code leads to konamicodesites.com (where you better have learned the code before you arrive.) You’ll have to type in the code when you get there. “Perform the Konami Code to access this website”, is all you’ll see on the page, until you do! Read the right side of the page. I don’t have an iPhone for testing, so please get back to me with details on that.

The list of sites you can visit there is vast, so consider that fact before you go. Translation, you’ll need some free time, to really enjoy sites like these: http://www.cornify.com/ and http://www.paulirish.com/

From Facebook to Your Website

facebook social pluginsYour challenge of using Social Media to promote business can be solved by a simple process. Here we will show one three-part solution to attracting more visitors to your website. Some assumptions are made about your computer skills and the form and content of your website and blog, and we’ll explain those along the way.

For now, consider these as being the first three requirements:

  • You have a website.
  • You have a blog.
  • You are a Facebook user (perhaps with a business page.)

Your website: Here we assume that when people land on your website, it’s obvious to them what you want them to do there. If the only thing on the homepage is this phrase: “Call now to learn more – (760) 555-5555” – your visitor knows what to do. So, keep it simple. Of course, most people want to know a bit more about you and your services or products, so you’ll want to feature the best of what you have to offer, in a clean and clear format. Groups of three make sense and for many people, it’s a small number of things to consider, and enough to tell most of the story about what you are selling. Give them easy to follow navigation, so they can dig deeper if they need more information, but keep the opportunity to contact you in front of them at all times. Your phone number and links to your email, or a contact page should be right there, so when they are ready to make the purchase, they can easily take that important step of connecting with you; and your website has done its job!

Your blog: This is where you have the opportunity to focus on any number of topics. You can post about any aspect of your business; the value you bring, what makes you or yours the best, the level of dedication or experience you bring, or you can go completely off topic and post about some event or some personal experience you have that allows your readers to know you as more than a salesperson; to know you are a REAL person. It may seem counterintuitive to not be always driving toward closing a sale, but people do business with people. So, if they get to know you, they make like you and trust you, and that may be why they call you in the end.

Your blog may be the best connector between Facebook and your website. It can serve as the intermediate step, by providing the content you will share on Facebook, with links back to specific pages on your website. There are a number of examples of that feature in this post. Every place in the text that contains a keyword or key phrase provides an opportunity for you to create a link to an appropriate page on your website. This is the essence of SEO, where search engines pick up links they provide to people who search. A link back to this article will be posted on Facebook as soon as it is on my blog. Be sure to include an image with your blog posts, so Facebook will have something to show your Fb friends and followers.

Your Facebook (business page): You can use a personal page on Facebook, if that’s where you get more attention from people who do business with you. The difference between a business and personal page on Facebook is outside the scope of this article, but you can click that link for more information. (Just be sure to come back here to finish this exercise!)

Use Facebook as a place to say; “Hey, look at this!” Knowing that Facebook changes all the time, you have the opportunity to post there as often as you like, and you can re-post the same links back to your blog or website as often as makes sense, to keep your blog content and business website in front of people on a regular basis. This is the “good news, bad news” feature of Facebook – the impression you make there is fleeting. That is the very reason you need a blog and a website – you need to provide a stable place where your prospects can go to get the information they need about your business to make buying decisions. Posting links to blog articles (with graphics, don’t forget) is the easy way to feed fresh new material to your friends and followers, so it won’t seem like you are posting the same old thing over and over. I’ll touch on this again in the summary.

Summary:

The three components of this article were provided in that order for a purpose. Your website is the ultimate destination, your blog is the connector, and Facebook is the “in your face” place where you can keep on saying, “look at me!” and people might do just that.

Without a website, you have no place to provide the static information people need when making buying decisions. For about twenty years now, we’ve been saying; “If you don’t have a website, you’re not REALLY in business.” That may sound heavy-handed, but hey, we are website developers and we want you to do business with us.

Blogging may be new to many people, as a way to drive business, but there are many businesses now whose entire business is based on their blog. For you, a blog is a place where you can continue to provide fresh new content (what Google loves…), so you can drive traffic to your website and give your Facebook fans something to consider on a daily (or more often than that, if you are so inclined) basis. With a few lines on Facebook and a link back to your blog, along with an eye-catching image, your blog give prospects a place to learn more about you and your business, before they click into your website for the full story.

Looking back at the title of this post, you might think it odd that Facebook came last in the order of things. However, your website and your blog have to be there, for this whole thing to make sense! I’m reminded of this (misquoted) expression when I hear people say, “SEO is dead!”

Search that phrase (SEO is dead) and you’ll find: About 48,200,000 results.
While a search for simply, “SEO” nets: About 210,000,000 results.
Since the one is contained in the other, your results are unpredictable, at best.
Also, when Google tweaks their algorithm again, all bets are off!

Here, for your reading pleasure, is an article (website, really) written years ago, to address this very same concern.

Today, we are going to call SEO something else. Content optimization – yes, that’s better. Easier to say? Well no, you need more syllables. Easier to explain? No, it’s the same as SEO, but the name makes more sense. We were never optimizing engines, after all. So, the new questions are – depending on levels of understanding:

Traditional Copywriting is the New SEO

hummingbirdThis is the essence of what’s new in SEO. Write compelling content and people will share it. That’s pretty much everything, except, you should still include links to relevant things in your text. So, if you’ve written several articles that provide further clarification of the topic at hand, (like, What is SEO) you should include links to those posts and pages. It just makes sense. Your readers benefit by easy access to more content, and search engines will still do what they’ve always done; associate those links with the topic and keywords in the phrase. That is how it works. It really hasn’t changed much.

As you know, I’ve been following this topic of SEO changes for some time and here is an article by a successful blogger that pretty much sums up what I am saying here. Brian Clark and people like him simply write good content about the world of blogging, SEO, Social Media, etc. And, people pay for that good advice. So, taking a cue from a professional blogger, it just kind of makes sense that I should chime in on the conversation.

SEO is not dead. It is constantly changing. If things did not change all the time with technology, life would be pretty boring, perhaps more stable.
Without constant change, a whole lot of people would be out of a job. If everyone stops searching, then SEO will surely die. Turn off the Internet, SEO dies. You get my point.

To illustrate, here is an article that’s a bit more current. It can be said in three words, “content is king!” That used to be a catch phrase when Yahoo! was new….
Today, it means something a little different. Engagement, online audience optimization, and authority are the buzzwords today. Produce and market good content for your readers and you win.

Not Waiting

Having not timed this for myself, it seems my threshold of tolerance is maybe around 10-15 seconds, depending on the computer I’m using.
For the next few days, I’m going to pay attention to this and see what happens.

Simple Search Stuff – Google

numberoneongoogleHow can I get to be number one on Google? That’s a much better search term than Best SEO in Palm Desert. Why? Because if you don’t know what SEO is, how will you know to use that term in your search.

Presumption is a major impediment to progress when thinking about how people are going to find links with search. I’m guilty.
So, now, let’s make changes! Yes.

Even the search term, “what is SEO“, is pretty good. My explanation may be the best you’ll ever read and the easiest to understand, but if you don’t find a link to my page when you search for that answer, I’m nobody! I’m a speech without a voice, a puppet without strings, a dummy who is truly dumb.

So, we retool, rethink, re-imagine what we’re supposed to be doing here and then we look for a way to make more money when we demonstrate our success. That seems fair.

I’m done for now. Preparing to take a call on a new website design project for a client; I’ll ponder this further and post updates as I make progress.
